The very next day the demand for a better defense system grew loud. Disregarding DORA, people signed petitions and staged protests, and by the time the Zeppelins revisited in October, the Anti-Aircraft Defense Force had been formed and training had begun, and Lieutenant-Commander Rawlinson had secured a single high-powered mobile anti-aircraft gun from Paris. A plan was established that included the selection of searchlight stations and fixed gun locations, and the Anti-Aircraft Mobile Brigade was set up, complete with high-speed vehicles that would do fifty miles per hour while blaring their klaxons. When five Zeppelins were sighted motoring into British airspace on October 13, Rawlinson and his crew leapt into action. They raced through London to the pre-selected gunning site in Moorgate Street in a convoy that consisted of Rawlinson’s armoured car, a vehicle bearing ammunition for the French gun, and another towing the gun itself. The streets were filled with vehicular and pedestrian traffic, but the Brigade careened through, and people jumped out of their way. Rawlinson later wrote of the night with almost boyish delight:

I feel quite confident that no man who took that drive will ever forget any part of it…I had such an anxious job myself that I had no time to laugh, but I am sure I smiled all the way…The noise of our sirens being as deafening as the glare of our headlights was dazzling, the omnibuses in every direction were seeking safety on the pavement. I also observed, out of the corner of my eye, several instances of people flattening themselves against the shop windows, the public being at that time infinitely more fearful of a gun moving at such a terrific speed than they were of any German bombs, of whose possibilities they had then but little experience.
